What is phlebology?

Discover what phlebology is

Phlebology is a medical branch dedicated to the study of conditions affecting the veins, particularly venous insufficiency and varicose problems located in the lower limbs. A doctor practicing phlebology performs physical and ultrasound examinations, makes diagnoses, and administers treatments for venous problems.

Venous insufficiency occurs when the veins have health problems and can no longer efficiently perform their role of circulating blood from the extremities to the heart. This condition is widespread and has seen a significant increase in our knowledge in recent years. It is established that this disease is chronic and progressive, hence the importance of early detection and rapid intervention to prevent serious long-term complications.

Risk factors

Some risk factors predispose to the development of this disease, such as:

  • Age

  • Being female

  • Pregnancy

  • Abdominal obesity

  • A history of thrombophlebitis

  • Trauma (contusion/fracture)

  • Genetics

  • Static standing work

Signs and symptoms

The signs and symptoms that may result from venous insufficiency of the lower limbs are vast and often unrecognized.

Here are the main ones for which you may benefit from a phlebology evaluation:

  • Varicose veins (dilated and bulging veins, often tender)

  • Vein varicosity (tiny red or blue veins on the skin surface)

  • Heaviness/pain

  • Ankle edema

  • Numbness

  • Nocturnal cramps

  • Restless legs

  • Itching

  • Change in skin color

  • Non-healing ulcer or sore

The treatment

Varicose veins are treated with sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is currently the most commonly used treatment in the field. It is a safe, effective, affordable, minimally painful method that does not require any downtime. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a medication (liquid or foam) directly into the affected vein using a needle. This creates spasm, inflammation, and ultimately scarring inside the diseased vein in order to permanently close it. As a result, the blood that was circulating there will take the path of one of the many other healthy veins to return to the heart.

Initially, several treatment sessions are necessary to optimize results (approximately 1 to 5). A session lasts about 20 minutes, with a minimum of 4 weeks between each one. A treatment plan will be proposed by the doctor during the evaluation. Since venous disease is chronic, it is normal for new varicose veins or spider veins to develop over time. An annual follow-up appointment may be suggested to avoid having to undergo the entire treatment again after a few years.

Other types of treatment are sometimes recommended depending on the severity of venous insufficiency and a person's medical condition. These include endovascular techniques (laser or radiofrequency) and surgery. During the evaluation, the doctor will discuss the options that apply to you and refer you as needed.
